Much Ado About Cargill: The Twitterstorm Rages On
Yesterday was an amazing day on Twitter as the ag and science communities came together in a big way, letting Cargill hear their voices. Cargill announced that they have partnered with The Non-GMO Project in the butterfly-labeling of products. These are the same people who label kitty litter and bottled water as non-GMO — pay the fee and get your butterfly. The verification of products as non-GMO is not the issue. Other companies do this. The issue is with The Non-GMO Project, who has blatantly made it known that their agenda is to rid the planet of ag biotech. Their strategy is to label products as non-GMO whether it has a GM counterpart or not, and fuel consumers’ fear of GMO so that eventually, GMO products are driven out of the market. In other words, if successful, the 25,000+ acres of sugarbeets in the Imperial Valley would go to 0, along with related jobs.
This article explains the Cargill “tweet heard ’round the world” and even quotes one of my responses!
